Volunteer Information

Thank you for your interest in volunteering your time to Nåusm. There are a number of opportunities to assist the staff and students at Nåusm. Please take a moment to read through the information.

Why does Nåusm need volunteers? Nåusm is dedicated to recreating a process whereby the Salish Language is passed from parent to child, elder to youth, as once was common. This is accomplished by three main methods: increasing the number and quality of materials available to teach the Salish language for primary students by creating a complete curriculum with materials and activities for the primary grades; increasing the number of speakers through community participation in school activities and programs and the school’s participation in community activities; and increasing the fluency of Salish speakers through participation in the school and the school’s outreach programs and community events. Volunteer staff provides tremendous assistance to the Nåusm staff in helping to fulfill its mission.

Volunteer Positions: A brief description of the positions and their time commitments are given below (you do not need to know Salish to volunteer – you just need to be committed to the mission of Nåusm– your assistance is greatly appreciated):

Curriculum Development volunteers are needed to assist the curriculum specialists in the creation of Salish curriculum and activities. There are a number of ways to assist, from helping with art projects; photocopying; cut and past projects; etc.

Classroom Aide volunteers are needed to assist the classroom teachers in the classroom with a variety of duties. Help with assessment; daily classroom setup and cleanup; photocopying; art projects, etc.

Breakfast and Lunch volunteers are needed to help with food service duties. All children attending Nåusm are given breakfast and lunch every day. Volunteers are needed to help set up these meals, distribute, cleanup, etc.

Event volunteers are needed to help staff the Nåusm booth at pow-wows, community venues, the Montana State Fair, etc. Duties would include helping set up the booth, selling items at the booth to benefit the school, teardown, etc.

YOUR AVAILABILITY: Because of the personal time and effort invested in the Volunteer Program, all volunteer applicants should seriously consider their own personal responsibilities before applying. If you are currently in school, travel for your job on a regular basis, work more than 50 hours a week, or have many other family commitments, please be sure our Volunteer Program is the right volunteer choice for you.

If you are interested in volunteering for any of the above positions, please call the Nåusm office at (406) 726-5050 or e-mail us at debbie@salishworld.com Thank you for your interest!
